Official Newsletter for the
Dallas Group Psychotherapy Society
Winter 2004
Presidents Chair
By Alice Tawwater-Frazier
Happy New Year. It is hard to believe that we are in the year 2004. When I write that date on a receipt, I remember the science fiction comics of my youth. I think they took place in the distant future of the year 2000. Who would have believed that it could be here and gone so quickly and bring with it so much more to be experienced and completed?
Time has passed in the same way for DGPS. This last year went very quickly, and as most of you know from our last newsletter, very successfully. In the year of 2004 we have many new beginnings and new plans. Let me fill you in and invite you to be a part of our organization this year.
In January we started a community outreach program working with Aids Arms Counseling Services. We are providing group counseling to the parents of teens involved in a community truancy program. Lana Self and Tess Castleman facilitated the group in January. This is a volunteer opportunity that benefits a lot of people so if you are willing to give three Saturday mornings to co-facilitate a group please call Marti Kranzberg at 214. 528-1815.
The Program Committee has scheduled three interesting programs for this year as well as a great topic for our Business meeting:
What You Didnt Learn in Graduate School about Addiction Recovery
Money, Psychotherapy and Ethics
Understanding Mate Selection: A Key to Marital Therapy
Introductions to Energy Therapies: From Psychology to Physics
The Training Committee is actively developing a new Training Program. It is due to begin this fall so stay tuned.
We have another fun fundraiser happening this spring. We are going to have a Bizarre Bazaar on Saturday, May 1, from 1 until 5 p.m. under the direction of Laura Warner and Cynthia Lovell. Call them to work on the committee, donate items or to arrange for space to show and sell your art or that of a friend.
The web site is in development and is scheduled to be up and running this spring. Each Committee is in the process of developing a Committee page. When the web site is completed you will be able to get DGPS news and information instantly. No more missed opportunities for programs, training or socials.
There is one major change that I would like to note. The primary method of distributing the newsletter will be email. You will also be able to print it off from the web site when that is completed. The goal is to decrease mailing cost and work hours by changing to electronic mail so please contact Cynthia Lovell at 214.321-5663 if this will not work for you. Remember: The newsletter committee needs to hear from you if you cannot receive the newsletter by electronic mail.
I hope to see each one of you at a social, program or committee meeting soon.
Until then,
Alice
The Dallas Group Psychotherapy Society Programs for 2004.
DGPS is a multi-disciplinary society, dedicated to Group Psychotherapy.
Friday, March 19, 1 p.m.-4 p.m. What You Didnt Learn in Graduate School About Addiction Recovery with Julian Devereux, LMSW, LCDC, Gail Ardman, LCSW, LMFT, LCDC and Peter Boger, LPC.
Many therapists have clients who struggle with addictions, although this is not their presenting complaint. Therapists who do not specialize in substance abuse and addictions are often at a loss as to how to best help clients. Come hear Peter Boger, Julien Devereux, and Gail Ardman de-mythologize addiction recovery. They will provide a systems based framework for assessment and treatment planning, offer resources and techniques for working with addicts and alcoholics, and provide a better understanding of the 12 steps as a vehicle for deep personal change. 3 CEUs available.
Sunday, June 6, 11:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Annual Business Meeting, Light Lunch and Program, Money, Psychotherapy and Ethics with Shari Porter Jung, LCSW and Marti Kranzberg, Ph.D.
Most of us grew up with a paucity of information and conflicting messages and multi-layered meanings of words like plenty, abundance, prosperity, and wealth. Our unexplored attitudes, values, and behavior about abundance and poverty can spill over into our work. In this program Shari Porter Jung and Marti Kranzberg will investigate the origins of our attitudes and values and how they may relate to issues about money and ethics in the practice of psychotherapy. 3 Ethics CEUs available.
Friday, September 17, 9 a.m.- 12 p.m. Understanding Mate Selection: A Key to Marital Therapy with Terry Parsons, Ph.D.
Terry Parsons will share from his research about the developmental process of mate selection and its vital role in couples therapy. Terry will address how we as therapists can help couples: (1) recall positives about their relationship, (2) develop empathy for their mate, and (3) make positive growth and changes in their individual lives and relationship. 3 CEUs available.
Exposure to cutting edge energy therapies is a must for todays mental health provider. Come learn what energy therapies are, how they work, and how you can use them in your practice to help clients with past trauma, addictions and phobias. James Self will present his expertise with Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). Hilary Shaw will present Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). Participants will have an opportunity to experience these powerful tools for themselves during the program. 3 CEUs available.
Location: Pecan Creek Office Park (meeting room)
8340 Meadow Rd., Dallas, TX 75231
Cost: $10.00 for students, $15.00 for DGPS Members, and $25.00 for Non-members

Bizarre Bazaar!
Spring DGPS Fundraiser
Saturday, May 1, 2004
1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.
SMU Meadows School of the Arts
(Atrium and Lobby)
You wont want to miss helping with and attending our Bizarre Bazaar Spring Fundraiser! The Bizarre Bazaar is an arts, crafts, and unique items sale and silent auction. Food, drinks, music and fun will definitely be in store for all who attend.
We feel very fortunate to have this event at SMU Meadows School of the Arts. In addition to raising funds to benefit the community outreach activities of DGPS, we hope to promote the creative endeavors of folks in our community. You can help in many ways (even if you cannot attend the Bizarre Bazaar on May 1, your input and help is valuable):
*Volunteer to be on one of the Teams
Site Team
Food Team
Advertising Team
Silent Auction Team
Arts/Crafts/Unique Items Sales Team
Entertainment Team
*Purchase and donate a piece of art for the silent auction
(Many artists would appreciate selling a piece of
art rather than donating because if they donate, they
can only deduct (for IRS purposes) the costs of materials.
But if you purchase the piece for full or discounted price,
You can deduct the cost of the piece if you donate to a non-
profit.)
*Purchase and donate or obtain a donation of a service or gift
certificate for the Silent Auction (Massage, Dinner for Two
at a local restaurant, etc.)
*Donate a piece of your own work (arts, crafts,
photography, etc.) for the silent auction
*Pay for a table ($25)-- to sell your art or craft
OR provide a table for a starving artist or student
*Contact artists and crafters who might like to have a table
at the Bazaar

DGPS PROGRAM REVIEW
By Hilary Shaw, LCSW
Melody Fortenberry, Ph.D. presented The Family as a Group on Friday, November 21, 2003 at the Pecan Creek meeting room. Melody was able to get a family together from a group of volunteers. I tell you, there were some fine actors in that group of children. Melodys patience was exceptional. I played the brooding sibling with nothing but complaints. The presentation was interesting and really held everyones attention. Now I know for sure that family therapy is a real specialty, and that was made clear by watching a pro like Melody.
Our Lives
The purpose of this column is to help our members share the joys and concerns in our personal lives in a way that allows support and celebration. Please contact Ginny Conlon at 214-352-5922 with information regarding births, marriages, illnesses, deaths, or other related news.
Jaunell Hughes, a long time member of DGPS, died in October, 2003. She served as President of DGPS and was a psychiatrist at Veterans Hospital in Dallas. Our sincere sympathy to her friends and family.
Melissa Green is a new mom! Riley Nicole McGarry was welcomed into this world on December 9, 2003, a normal, healthy little baby girl weighing 5 pounds 3½ ounces. Congratulations Melissa and Ed!
Lana Self underwent surgery late last fall and experienced some complications. However, she is healing well and is almost back to her old self. Way to go, Lana!
Genie Weitzman has had a recurrence of cancer, this time with a tumor causing pressure on one kidney. She is undergoing chemotherapy again in hopes of reducing the mass. You remain in our thoughts and prayers, Genie.
Marti Kranzberg has been elected to the Board of AGPA. Congratulations, Marti! We know you will do an awesome job and we are proud that you are such an active member of DGPS as well. Good Luck!
Marti Kranzberg has also written an article titled Self-Disclosure in Therapy which will be published soon in a book titled Complex Dilemmas in Group Psychotherapy. Our heartiest kudos to you, Marti.
Professional Issues
By Marti Kranzberg, Ph.D.
The issue of multiple relationships and overlapping roles has been a flashpoint for clinicians as we navigate the often complex roles and complicated situations we encounter with clients and students. The purpose of these prohibitions has always been to protect clients and students from harm or exploitation. But the guidelines were often rigid or unrealistic given the reality of practice and the sometimes unavoidable intersection of our lives with those of our clients and students.
The APA revised its ethical standards in 2002 and created guidelines that, in many ways, make more sense. While it is impossible to explore these changes in any depth, some examples are worth noting. The new guidelines acknowledged the existence of unavoidable multiple relationships in rural communities, small towns, military bases and unique ethnic or language groups. They also identified relationships that are unforeseen and therefore not unethical, using the instance of a client beginning to date his therapists neighbor.
In addition, there were changes in relationships not prohibited including attendance at funerals, graduations, or weddings of clients, participation of a psychologists child in a team coached by a client, or giving or receiving gifts. Significant for group therapists and particularly vague was the revised guideline that seeing a client in both individual and group therapy is not prohibited as long as the clinician takes special protections against inadvertently revealing to group members what was disclosed in individual therapy.
Further, the new guidelines warned against therapy with people close to one another. As an example, serving as therapist to roommates was seen as potentially unethical because of impairment in therapeutic judgment that could result in harm.
These new guidelines highlight the complexity of issues of overlapping roles and relationships. They remind us about our responsibilities to clients, in and out of the therapy office.
