Summer 2004
Presidents Chair
By Alice Tawwater Frazier
Greetings To You All.
I hope that your summer has been filled with family and friends to balance out the rain and mosquitoes. The fireworks this July Fourth were numerous and beautiful. I will be grateful when they once again celebrate peace and prosperity for all.
DGPS held its annual Business meeting on June 6TH. It was well attended. We started with meditation and sharing time before we moved into the business of yearly reports and then into our program.
I am glad to report that DGPS is on track with all of our goals including a balanced budget, our own website, great programs, and both a new Training Program and Halloween Fundraiser in development.
Our next Board meeting is on July 31st from 9am-1pm. It will be held at the home of Tess Castleman. Thank you Tess. We will be considering liability insurance for the DGPS Board and Executive Officers. Vicki Rogers is inviting several insurance representatives to do a presentation. Thank You Vicki. Board meetings are open to the members at large so please come.
We have three new Board members. They are John Gladfelter, Shari Porter Jung and Becky Pruessner. A huge “thank you” goes to Bert Wolcott and Norm Bouffard who finished their term on the Board. We will miss your wisdom. Laura Warner will continue to serve on the Board in her position as President Elect.
A new membership directory is due to be published soon so be sure and join in order to be listed. Go to www.dgps.org for an application.
The Program Committee did a wonderful job again as Marti Kranzberg and Shari Porter Jung presented Money, Psychotherapy and Ethics following the business meeting. It was informative, fun, stimulating and met the three-hour Ethics requirement for this year. It doesn’t get better than that. Thank you Shari and Marti for making Ethics fun.
We have a social at Gershwin’s Restaurant on Friday, July 23rd from 5 to 7p.m. Hope to see you all there. Remember; be there or be square.
Alice

Book Review
By John Gladfelter, Ph.D.
Book Review: The Heart and Soul of Change: What Works in Therapy
By Hubble, Duncan and Miller: APA: Washington, DC (2003)
You may have heard or read something about what is a hot topic in psychotherapy, namely, common factors. This book is a compilation of thoughts and opinions on this topic, it’s timeliness and the effect it may or may not have on HMOs, Congress and insurance companies. The essence of the topic is that research is fairly clear that therapy works and the different therapeutic approaches all have some common factors that seem to be the agents of change in the therapeutic process. In a previous book review I mentioned Prochaska and his research findings - well - it’s a lot more about that. The thing to me that is missing in most of the research topics is hypnosis and group therapy. This is an expensive book, so find someone or some library that has it. If you want to know where changes are going to occur in the psychotherapy field, this book will give you some strong hints.

ON THE HORIZON
FOOD – FUN – FRIVOLITY
Our annual Halloween party fundraiser has been combined with our Bizarre Bazaar Fundraiser.
MARK YOUR CALENDAR for Saturday, OCTOBER 30TH, 7:00 p.m. for the BIZARRE BAZAAR HALLOWEEN FUNDRAISER at Betty Gouge’s house.
This night will be filled with fun, food, frivolity, costume contests, entertainment, auctions (loud and silent), spirits (the kind you drink and the kind that haunt you), tricks and more tricks (no, not that kind).
Last year’s Halloween fundraiser was in McKinney at Alice Tawwater Frazier’s house and was unique, exciting, wonderful, fun and profitable.
Gossip Column - Last Year’s Party
Lana Self, who, was in charge of The Sorting Hat has become infamous for her diagnostic skills with “that hat”.
John Gladfelter’s Tarot Card Reading left some starry-eyed and others baffled.
Regarding Tess’s tattoos…..She said they were temporary!
The painting from artist Jill Abernathy, was one of the many, wonderful and original works of art donated to DGPS and, much to Marti Kranzberg’s regret, is hanging in Carol Blanchard’s bedroom (a bidding war that may go down in DGPS fundraising archives).
This year’s party builders and fundraisers are up to the challenge and committed to outdo last year’s party and fundraiser. Why? Because we had great fun and we need more money. Last year’s Halloween fundraisers met their goal of raising enough money to implement a website. This year’s goal is to raise $6,000 to re-implement the DGPS Training Program, beginning in September 2005.
INVITATION FOR DINNER, WINE and PLANNING
The first fundraising-planning event will be held at Betty Gouge’s house Friday July 23, at 7:00 p.m. for buffet dinner and wine. If you’re interested in dinner, wine and/or being a part of this planning please RSVP to Betty Gouge at 972-484-3342 by noon, Wednesday, July 21 with how many will be attending. Not limited to DGPS members. Bring spouses/mates, friends, etc.
If you’re up for competition, challenge and excitement then join one of our fundraising teams. Our teams are modeled after Donald Trump’s TV show, “The Apprentice”.
The team bringing in the most money will be guests of honor at a royal banquet feast designed, prepared and served by the losing teams. This will be a complete royal affair, which will include entertainment and court jesters.
If you’re interested in more information or if you are ready to sign up, call Cynthia Lovell at 214-321-5663. If you want to be part of the planning, join us for dinner and wine on July 23rd at Betty Gouge’s house.
SWGPS Update
By Suzy Gadol-Anderson
Spring rolled around, wet and cool, and ready for SWGPS’s annual Spring Workshop. A hearty group of about 17, coming from all over Texas and New Mexico, converged on the Stagecoach Inn, right off Main Street in Salado, Texas. The Board met on Thursday, April 22nd and efficiently worked on the program for our October Conference in Dallas at the Doubletree Campbell Centre.
Friday, April 23rd, Robin Binnig, Ph.D. of Dallas began her presentation, helping all attending to identify stressors and manage our stress reactions. As usual, we learned in the mornings and played in the afternoons. Robin finished her work with us on Saturday morning. The air was filled with Clary Sage and Lavendar, along with all types of soothing music. As usual, the time flew, and next thing we knew, it was time again to say good-bye to dear friends until October!
In 2007, SWGPS will be celebrating 50 years of education about and promotion of group therapy. We will commemorate this achievement and if you are interested in joining the task force to plan the festivities, please contact Tom at tlowry@mac.com.
SWGPS looks toward the fall, working on the 47th Annual Conference held October 21st through 23rd, 2004 at the Doubletree Hotel Dallas Campbell Centre. The theme this year is “In the Spirit of Groups: Spirituality and Group Therapy.” Be prepared to enjoy your mandatory three hours of ethics as well as many specific interest workshops and psychodynamic process groups. For room rates and reservations, please call 800-245-8918. For conference rates and how to reserve your space, contact Robin Binnig at 972-386-8599 or robinbinnig@yahoo.com. We look forward to spending time in Big D, and hope to see many old and new faces from the Dallas area!

Dear Marti:
On behalf of AIDS Arms, please accept our sincere gratitude for the support The Dallas Group Psychotherapy Society is providing for our Truancy Outreach Program. Seventeen parents have benefited from the support group facilitated by therapists from your organization. It has been obvious from the parents’ reactions that they have been very pleased with the group.
Thank you again for your support of our organization and the people we serve. We look forward to the months ahead when many more parents will learn effective approaches to talking to youth about behaviors related to truancy, HIV and STDs.
Sincerely,
