Winter 2005
Presidents Chair
By Alice Tawwater Frazier
Happy New Year to you all. I hope that your New Years celebration was full of joy and people you care about. I always get excited at the beginning of the year because it is like a gift that you open slowly and if awareness is present you can savor that gift like a fine meal. Each moment becomes an opportunity to create connection and beauty with this gift.
DGPS is a big part of my new year with continued celebration about the new training program beginning this Fall, a website that is now official with our logo and nice graphics, and some exciting programs that are being planned for April, June and September. We are in great shape financially and your Board met on January 29th to plan the 2005 budget. We are also planning a co-chair retreat this spring that will be a day of creativity, reflection and fun. It will be a time to say Thank You to those of you who work so hard to make DGPS a success.
I am your representative to the Affiliate arm of AGPA. This group is comprised of group therapy societies from all over the country. We have an e community where different topics are discussed online. This Fall/ Winter the topic has been successful marketing strategies for increasing membership and retaining current members. I want to pass on the major points because they validate much of what we have already put into motion and then they offer some new options that we can consider.
The ones that we have implemented or that are in the works:
1) Establish a mentoring program.
2) Focus on current members making personal contact with new members.
3) Send speakers to agencies, hospitals, schools and universities.
4) Conduct on-site training for agencies and counseling centers.
The ones that we may want to consider:
1) Put agency advertisements into our membership directory as a service.
2) Offer an information and referral service for Group therapist in the yellow pages.
3) Make personal contact with all university counseling centers before each training and event sponsored by DGPS.
4) Work with local universities to get extra credit for students who complete training or events sponsored by DGPS. Offer a number of scholarships to students in local graduate programs to DGPS events.
These are all great ideas and are directed toward new therapists who need DGPS training and who will offer so much back to DGPS in return. Your Board will be looking at these ideas but we need your thoughts and feedback. It is another opportunity to create exactly what we want; all we need is a connection to your ideas, actions, commitment and playfulness. Feel free to call or to email me.

BOOK REVIEW
by John Gladfelter, Ph. D.
Threads, Knots, Tapestries: How a Tribal
Connection is Revealed through Dreams and Synchronicities
By Tess Castleman: Syren Book Company, Saint Paul (2003)
Tess Castleman is one of our own and an author of a book that is about group
therapy and much more. Tess addresses the fabric of life that is indeed the genesis of
the family, the culture, the community and part and parcel of group psychotherapy. Her approach naturally has its origins in Jungian analysis and uses dreams and our personal images of life to help us understand what's in us in our heads. Dreams are the essentials of our lives and we rarely stop to wonder how our dreams become the words that we use to describe them.
Here is a book to mull over, to contemplate, to let do to us what our dreams will allow. Do I
recommend reading this book? Yes, if you are ready to let your dreams have a crack at it and
then let friends, colleagues, friends and even strangers hear and experience you talk about what
they hear from you. This is not an easy book to read unless you are a therapist and then will let your dreams do the work. I think that this book is about the social life we live in and don't notice any more than fish notice they are in water.

DGPS members continue to volunteer to facilitate support groups for the parents/guardians of young people who have been court-ordered to attend educational programs provided by the AIDS/ARMS Network. One or two therapists will lead the parent support groups on the first three Saturdays of each month. Gail Ardman recently participated as facilitator and reported a positive experience with grateful participants.

Julien Devereux is joining the Senior Staff of Eupsychia Institute founded by Jacqueline Small. Author of eight books on soul based psychology, she offers 3, 6 and 10-day workshops that use integrative breath work to release energy, pain and memories in the body and invoke transpersonal awareness of the spiritual aspects of being. These workshops are held at Red Corral Ranch outside of Blanco, Texas on the Blanco River. It is a dream location with limestone and cedar cabins, wandering peacock and deer, a pool, labyrinth and an extensive library of spiritual books. For a great healing retreat go to the website at www.eupsychia.com.
Julien is also involved in the Dallas New Warrior Community, affiliated with the Mankind Project, as a new staff member for their New Warrior Training Adventure. This is an intensive weekend training for men to help them develop their lifes mission and purpose. The New Warrior philosophy represents a new brand of masculinity that does not reject the masculine but nurtures men to embody a more mature type of masculinity, attributing much of the problems in the world to the old paradigm of Warrior and to leaders embodying immature types of masculinity. In the tradition of mens initiation rituals, the weekend process is not fully disclosed to participants in advance but includes a series of experiential exercises and rituals as well as a ten-week integration group following the weekend. More information is available through www.mkp.org and
www.dallasmensnetwork.org.
Additionally, Julien is in the process of completing a dissertation proposal for the California Institute of Integral online and hopes to advance to candidacy by the end of the spring semester. He study is an organic inquiry collecting stories from people with long term sobriety, 20 or more years, about the transformative events and processes that they experienced in their recovery. If you would like to know more about CIIS and their online programs, the URL is www.ciis.edu. Anyone who would like to speak to me about any of these programs feel free to contact me at jpdevereux@sbcglobal.net or at 469-644-3975.

Why Would She Do That?
by Marti Kranzberg
A 30-something friend asked this about my motivation for spending a Saturday at a DGPS Board meeting. This was a great question. I started thinking: Why do I spend a significant amount of time working in professional organizations? And similarly, why do I always work with more than a few clients at significantly reduced fees?
I dont think of myself as an ambivalent entrepreneur. I can tolerate the instability of private practice and I like earning the income that I have been able to build over the years. So I dont think it is about financial considerations or giving away my time as my friend may have implied.
Upon reflection, I realized that I cannot imagine doing otherwise. Doing some type of community service has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Working with DGPS, among others, has been a wellspring for professional growth, collegial engagement and much needed sustenance for a profession that in some paradoxical way can be very, very lonely. It has averted burnout for work that takes an emotional toll we might prefer to ignore. And it has been colossal fun, an antidote (and great relief!) to taking myself too seriously.
But this is only part of the issue. It is vital to give back to the community that has given me so much. Providing services to clients who cannot not afford therapy is a way to do just that. I have been blessed by generous role models of therapists who allowed me to pay what I could afford for therapy. With gratitude, I pass that gift on to others.
I worry sometimes that this old-fashioned idea of doing service has gone by the wayside. Professional organizations like the APA still include fidelity and responsibility in their ethical guidelines and suggest that psychologists provide some services with no compensation or personal advantage. But fewer new professionals are joining professional organizations. I cant help but think they are missing something essential to loving the work of being a therapist.
