2007 Spring
Experiential Training in Group Psychotherapy
General Information
DGPS has been a pioneer in experiential group therapy training for more than 30 years. Here are a few highlights:
- Trainees have the opportunity to learn about group therapy from theoretical, experiential and practical perspectives.
- Two tracks will be offered each semester: one for therapists new to group therapy and another for experienced group therapists.
- Faculty will include two master clinicians with different theoretical orientations providing trainees the opportunity to experience varying perspectives on group.
- Based on a semester system, there will be three trainings for each Fall & Spring semester held on Fridays and Saturdays.
- 42 CEU hours will be provided per semester, including 16 hours of ethics.
- Group 101: Fundamentals of Group Therapy meets the educational requirements for certification as a Certified Group Psychotherapist.
- Faculty & curriculum change annually.
- One year DGPS membership at no cost to participants.
Beginning Track will include:
• Theory & practice of group psychotherapy, appropriate for the educational component of credentialing as Certified Group Psychotherapist
• Nuts & bolts of beginning work as a clinician
• Ethics of group psychotherapy
• Care of self & clients
• Practicum opportunities for students in the future
Advanced Track will include:
• Advanced topics of interest to experienced clinicians
• New topics introduced yearly
• Ethics for group psychotherapy
• Care of self & clients
Reasonable fees for advanced clinicians and very reasonable fees for students and beginning therapists
Training appropriate for clinicians in agencies and private practitioners with or without managed care contracts as well as students doing practicums and recent graduates in internships.

About our faculty:
Barbara Berenzden, B.S., LCDC, practicing for more than 30 years, has trained and worked along side of some of the old masters of group & family therapy including Virginia Satir, Carl Whittaker, and John Gladfelter. She was one of five clinicians who accompanied Carl Whittaker to train clinicians in the Soviet Union in 1990 and organized an international training conference with Virginia Satir in Dallas in 1984.
John Cade, LCSW, LPC is Clinical Director at Victims Outreach supervising agency staff and graduate school interns as well as working with victims of violent crime. He has as also been in independent practice for 25 years. He has served on the boards of Dallas Group Psychotherapy Society (DGPS), Southwestern Group Psychotherapy Society (SWGPS), The Family Place, Sexual Abuse Intervention Network of Dallas (SAIND), Texas Association Against Sexual Assault (TAASA) and Texas Victim Services Association (TVSA). John is Past President of DGPS, TAASA, and TVSA.
Gary Carpenter LMSW-ACP, LPC, LMFT, is a 1980 graduate of the Dallas Group Psychotherapy Program and has been conducting adult and adolescent groups since 1977. He is an approved supervisor for both Clinical Social Workers and for Licensed Professional Counselors in Texas and has extensive training in psychodynamic psychotherapy and its application to group therapy. Gary is in private practice in The Colony and Plano area and conducts adult PTSD groups.
Julien Devereux, LMSW, LCDC has 20 years of experience working at all levels of adolescent, addiction and criminal justice programs. He currently coaches, consults, and practices in Dallas. He is currently completing a PhD dissertation at the California Institute of Integral Studies in human and organizational transformation. He is a senior staff member at Eupsychia Institute member doing Integrative Breathwork and also facilitates a weekly men’s work group. Married for thirty three years to Barbara, he has two daughters, Michelle and Andrea and plays bass guitar and harmonica for the Lurking Notions, a recovery rock band.
Nanine Ewing, Ph.D., FAGPA, CGP, ADTR, LMFT is certified as a group psychotherapist, registered dance-movement therapist, an approved consultant in clinical hypnosis and Adlerian psychotherapist. In private practice, she specializes in group therapy, relational issues, anxiety disorders, body image and eating disorders as well as well as doing training and consultation. Her diverse presentations have included creating successful a group therapy practice, the use of movement and other non-verbal techniques in group, development stages of group process and the clinician’s view of self in the practice of psychotherapy.
John H. Gladfelter, Ph.D., ABPP, FAGPA has been a faculty of the Fielding Graduate University in Santa Barbara, CA since 1974 and been in private practice for over 40 years. His passions include hypnotherapy and Redecision therapy. He has trained clinicians extensively in both modalities and has been instrumental in training a new generation of Redecision therapists. He has been a frequent presenter at local, regional, national and international conferences.
Shari Porter Jung, LCSW, LMFT, CGP has been practicing for twenty-five years in Dallas, TX. With specialties in Redecision therapy, group, couples therapy and narcissistic issues, she has trained therapists at local, state, national and international conferences. A member of AGPA, NASW, NAMFT, she is former president of DGPS. She is co-founder and co-trainer for the International Institute of Redecision Therapy.
Marti B. Kranzberg, Ph.D., ABPP, FAGPA, CGP, LPC has been a practicing clinician for more than twenty five years with interests in group psychotherapy, Redecision therapy, work with the elderly and chronic mentally ill and therapy with lesbian and gay clients. A Diplomate in Group Psychotherapy and Fellow of AGPA, she has trained therapists at local, state, national and international conferences. In addition she serves as Adjunct Faculty at Fielding Gradulate University and Texas Woman’s University. She has served as staff writer for The Group Circle, writing more than a dozen articles about the shifting ground of mental health practice today. She has also published articles on group psychotherapy, working with gay and lesbian clients and Redecision therapy.
Rick Spletter, LCSW, LPC, CBT has been in private practice for 25 years specializing in depression, anxiety, relationship issues and anger. He is president of the Dallas Society for Bioenergetic Analysis (DSBA) and an approved trainer and supervisor for DSBA doing workshops and seminars for many years. He is married and has three children ages 14, 12, and 6.
